  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract; mix until smooth. Slowly stir in hot coffee or water.
  3. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. For the orange filling: Combine sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in orange juice and cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in orange zest and butter; let cool.
  5. For ganache: Heat cream until steaming; pour over chopped chocolate and let sit before stirring until smooth.
  6. Assemble the cake by layering chocolate cake with orange filling between layers. Pour ganache over the top.
  7. Garnish with fresh orange slices or candied peel if desired.
