Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef shoulder, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large shallot, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the beef cubes with soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, five-spice powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Toss everything together until well coated. Allow it to marinate for at least 30 minutes or up to 24 hours for deeper flavor.
  2. Heat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the marinated beef cubes on it. Grill each side for about 2-3 minutes until cooked through and slightly charred.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, add a little oil. Once hot, add the thinly sliced shallots. Cook them until they become golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning!
  4. In another skillet (or using the same one after removing shallots), fry an egg sunny-side up until the whites are set but yolk remains runny.
  5. Divide your cooked rice among bowls. Top each bowl with grilled beef cubes, crispy fried shallots, and a sunny-side-up egg. Drizzle any remaining marinade over top and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
